Geography Expectations
Grade 7:
- identifies and explains the themes of geographic inquiry: location/place, environment, region, interaction, and movement
- creates and uses maps for a variety of purposes
- identifies some challenges and opportunities presented by the physical environment and ways in which people have responded to them
- uses the geographic inquiry process to investigate the impact of natural events and/or human activities that change the physical environment, exploring the impact from a geographic perspective
- demonstrates an understanding of significant patterns in Earth’s physical features and of some natural processes and human activities that create and change those features
Geography Expectations
Grade 8:
- identifies some of the ways in which the physical environment such as climate, landforms, soil type, vegetation, and natural resources have influenced settlement patterns in different countries around the world
- uses the geographic inquiry process to investigate issues related to the interrelationship between human settlement and sustainability (e.g. the global trend towards increased urbanization)
- identifies significant spatial patterns in human settlement on a global scale (e.g. linear, scattered, and clustered patterns in populations in different geographic regions)
History Expectations
Grade 7:
- analyzes aspects of the lives of various groups in Canada between 1713 and 1800, and compares them to the lives of people in present-day Canada
- uses the historical inquiry process to investigate perspectives of different groups on some significant events, developments, and /or issues related to the shift in power in colonial Canada from France to Britain
- describes various significant events, developments, and people in Canada between 1713 and 1800, and explains their impact
History Expectations
Grade 8:
- describe the political factors, key personalities, significant events, and geographical realities that led to the creation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867, and to the growth of Canada as other provinces and territories joined Confederation
- use a variety of resources and tools to gather and communicate information about the needs and challenges that led to the formation and expansion of Canada
- compare Canada as it was in 1867 to Canada today, including political, social, and other issues facing the country in both periods
